Commercialization and expansion to Texas and California followed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and later to the Mediterranean region, Israel, Cyprus, and as far as South Africa.

Over time, various colors and flavors developed, ranging from white to pink to deep red. The red varieties owe their color to carotenoids and often taste milder than the original white ones. Typical of the grapefruit is its fresh, tart character, a blend of sweetness, acidity, and a subtle bitterness, which comes in part from the bitter compound naringin. Its distinctive aroma is primarily due to nootkatone. Today, the grapefruit is popular worldwide, whether eaten on its own for breakfast, in juices and spritzers, or as an aromatic accent in cooking.

Pink Grapefruit
Pink grapefruit is known for its pleasantly sweet, fruity aroma. Its scent is uplifting, invigorating, and simultaneously calming. Many people find it particularly harmonious and pleasant. Originally from Israel, it has a stronger citrus aroma and appeals to grapefruit purists who appreciate its typical tart character. Thus, the spectrum ranges from delicate pink and mild to intense and pronounced, depending on the variety and ripeness.

Grapefruit vs. Pomelo vs. Pomelo

Many people confuse grapefruit, pummelo, and pomelo, but they are three different citrus fruits. The pomelo is the largest of them all, almost the size of a football, with a thick peel and pale white flesh. Its flavor is usually sweet and sour and very mild. The pummelo originates from Southeast Asia, is often slightly pear-shaped, and can grow up to 30 centimeters in diameter. It tastes sweet and sour with a subtle tartness and has firmer, juicier flesh. The grapefruit is smaller, about 10 to 15 centimeters in diameter, and aromatically tart with a fresh, pronounced acidity. In short: The grapefruit is the modern combination of pummelo and orange.
